Password Advice
It’s a Secret: 1. Passwords must not be written down This is a simple rule. From my days working with the MOD I remember how easy it was to unlock safes and steal passwords as both were usually written down somewhere easy to locate. Favourite one for safes was on a colander not a million miles away from said safe! Don’t do it. Otherwise why bother….. 2. Passwords must be set This is pretty sensible – how many of us have seen SQL installations with SA <blank>! 3. Require as few passwords as ......

Suppers Ready: Fun and games with Outlook 2007. Life wouldn’t be half as much fun without betaware!!! OK so installed it and started to use it but hit big problem – ‘Message could not be rendered’ – and blank message body. Sent of the error report but also decided to investigate…. Send test message – renders OK Penny ......

Blogging from Word 2007

You can do magic:

Big thanks to Jeff Julian for his guidance on how to setup Word 2007 for blogging. As proof of the success I’m blogging from Word for this article!

Jeff points out that for members, the Metablog API service URL is located at[YOUR USER NAME]/services/metablogapi.aspx so set this up with ‘Other’.

Thanks Jeff!

HD DVD for XBOX on the cheap
Rocking all over the world: Microsoft brought up the subject about an external HD-DVD device for Xbox 360 at E3 last week. The company didn't reveal any information about the pricing of such peripheral. However, yesterday reported that retail sources had informed them about Microsoft planning on a HD-DVD add-on for Xbox 360 which combined with the console would be cheaper than upcoming PS3. In the UK, Sony's PlayStation 3 is estimated to hit the price spot around £400, while ......

MS SQL Server BI (Intro)
The Never Ending Story (Pt1): With the Latest release of SQL Server Microsoft have really gone to town on BI. To understand this a little better I am going to run a series of interlinked blogs looking at this topic. Today we will start with “What is BI and what goes to make it” BI or Business Intelligence is a relatively new term but with old roots. The original concept is the same as it has always been: To make better use of the information collected by a company/business to help the ......

How hard is it for people in the know to keep secrets!
It’s a secret!: Why is it people are compelled to leak secrets? Remember all the WINOE (WF) leaks? Just noticed this little gem: I really think they should be pushing down the availability of BizTalk 2004 to more mass market pricing. Apparently they are (or will be) as I’ve heard there will be aggressive pricing in the $2K range. @ What does he know we don’t? Is he trying to be subtle with the leak? Watch this space ......

Been Thinking about SQL Service Broker in a BizTalk World
You can do magic: In a Connected Systems World the addition of Service Broker to SQL 2005 can be seen as ‘yet another messaging option” and its arrival applauded. Perversely it can also been seen in a negative light as a threat to BizTalk 2004 and so interesting discussions have come ourt of this thinking. For my part I welcome the addition, I am also a little sceptical about when I’ll opt to use it! Service Broker OK so what really is Service Broker: In the SQL world its a tentative ......

.Net winning in he Dev world

We are the champions:

Developing custom applications using Microsoft’s .NET framework is a growing trend.  According to Forrester, 56% of enterprises are choosing .NET, vs. 44% for J2EE, while IDC reports that 35.7% of large corporations use .NET for their most important applications, compared with 25.3% for Java.

Requirements Authoring Starter Kit
Your unbelievable!: One of the more fun but challenging aspects of my job is that I sit on the .Net PAC (Microsoft Partner Advisory Council)and this gives me an insight into new products, the workings and politics of the product teams and a chance to represent the partner community in feeding back to MS our views and feelings. An example of this was when the .Net PAc were presented too by the Visual Studio/Team Services product team. Whilst we liked what we saw we were very concerned about the lack ......

Six degrees of separation
Seven by Seven: While reading Malcome Gladwell’s “The Tipping Point” I came across the old experiment that indicates most people are separated by six hops. In Hollywood this gave rise to the ‘game’ of how many degrees of separation are there between a particular actor and Kevin Bacon. The fact is that there is never more than 6! More interestingly when all contempary actors and their connections are analysed we come up with some interesting stats. Most actors are only ......

Starship Trooper: There has been a lot of buzz around contract-first Web Services design & development lately. Nearly everybody thinks that it is a good thing, and that we finally should reach a state where we all can live and breath it. But most people have been complaining about the lack of tool support for the so called 'first step': contract design. WSCF offers a simple yet powerful WSDL Wizard that abstracts away all the nitty-gritty details of WSDL.As a next step you simply right-click ......

Google hates IE 7
Dance with the devil: A recent blog/item in the New York Times reports how upset Google are with MS for the new IE 7 search window and the fact it defaults to MSN search! Now call me stupid if you want too but isn’t that a little rich when no one is calling for Firefox to default its search window to MSN and not Google where it makes all its revenue ......

Does Firefox make money?

I recently read that Firefox has made its ‘owners’ $76 million in the last year. Not bad for a piece of free software! So how do they do it?

The answer is simple…. everytime we use the search window so neatly supplied, and we use google and we actually go on to buy something google pays Firefox 80% of the click through value!

Wonder if Microsoft have a similar deal with IE 7 and the Google search!

Load Music to Your iPod Without a PC
Music! Loading music to your iPod without a PC or Internet connection is now possible using a nifty little device calle the iLoad. Many families may own more than one or two iPods, so a device like this could benefit users who have to share one PC with one Internet connection. The iLoad connects to any iPod and converts music from a CD into a compressed MP3 file format to then transfer it directly into an iPod. It only takes about eight minutes to copy a full length CD, but users also have the option ......
