I've never worked with them but I have worked with Vista Research which sounds very similar. I joined their Society of Industry Leaders (www.societyofindustryleaders.com) a while ago and have since completed a handful of consultations with their clients since then. It's really not much of a time commitment, especially because you can choose not to participate in any of the projects they call you.

I have enjoyed my experience with Vista, both talking with very intelligent hedge fund managers, and getting paid, obviously.

I haven't worked with German Lehrman but I have worked with Greenwood Research. It's similar to GLG in that you are asked for your knowledge in a specific field so that those seeking industry information (asset managers etc.) can make better investment decisions. It's really great because you set your own consulting rate. Everyone should check it out!

Beware of GLG. They will spam you like there's no tomorrow once you join. They have armed themselves with all these compliance framework when in fact, a lot of insider information usually leaks out at the public meetings. God knows what happens at those private meetings...

Seriously people, what EXACTLY is the Gerson Lehrman Group? I don't understand what's going on here. I got an email from them today with a weird offer that doesn't make sense.

Are they looking to hire people full time, as employees with benefits? Or are they looking for contractors that will be I9'ed? How much will I get paid per hour to be an "expert"? How much will I get paid for taking the training and doing any other preparation? If the answers to these questions aren't readily available in the email I got, or in the below comments, how can this be a legit deal? Is this not a scam???

During the enrollment process, you set your own hourly honorarium and are reimbursed for the amount of time you spend on the phone with their client base. The "training" which is actually two minute tutorial of how to avoid situations where you may reveal confidential information is part of the enrollment process. Once an expert or "Council Member" as GLG refers to their experts, their research staff will evaluate your current expertise and leverage you to speak with their clientbase on a project by project basis. Once the project is completed, you can simply invoice for the amount of minutes dedicated to the work.

Does anyone have an idea of the consulting rate range/ have not done this before and am wondering what to set as my rate.

GLG matches experts with analysts who need a quick learning curve experience. I enjoy it and the analysts tend to have a "soft degrees" like art history or philosophy from Oxbridge or Stanford, Harvard, Yale and very "hard" MBAs from a top 25 school, like Wharton, Harvard, etc.

While they are top tier analysts, they do not have, for example, 30 years with Intel making chips. So, the analysts learn from the experts the "nitty gritty" of an industry. I know how to drill oil and gas wells and the analysts learn from me the oil and gas exploration and production business.

Gerson Lehrman Group is legit, and the positive comments posted so far are dead on. I am a GLG Counsel Member as well...yes, you can make very good money for your time (for those who asked, I bill at $250/hr...I don't know if that is typical or not), but as stated you could never turn it into a full time job. People who work very hard at it (you can raise your profile by writing articles, etc.) and have in demand expertise probably would bill 10 hours a month max. I bill perhaps ONE hour a month max...and I am still rank in the top 33% of Counsel Members.

It does take a bit of work to get started, filling out all the online forms...perhaps a couple hours invested. After that, all you have to do is accept the assignments offered to you if you wish to be passive (this is the route I take), or as I mentioned you can try to raise your visibility / profile by doing additional work. And as others mentioned, you are under no obligation to accept every assignment you are extended.

In summary, you get paid very good money to speak to someone (almost always on the phone, but the more lucrative assignments can be in person) about something your are a Subject Matter Expert on. The people you are talking to are smart...as mentioned, they are investment bankers and analyst. they just aren't experts in YOUR field. The conversations are usually very interesting, as you'd expect it would be given a chance to show off to a smart person how much you "know your stuff". And you get paid for it...I made $500 last week doing so.

I have been doing freelance with GLC for several years, and average a few consults per quarter at $450 per hour... it has been pretty easy work, and as long as you are diligent in writing articles, responding to inquiries, and providing value on the consults, you can make decent "vacation money", as I have done. A few of the articles I have written have even been syndicated by other sites, and have been quoted in other articles... kinda nice exposure for a consultant like myself.

do you know the commission of GLG

GLG is a very shady organization. I had an "interview" with them and they were very rude and unprofessional. The one girl sounded like she was drugged up (could barely complete a coherent sentence). I suggest anyone looking to work with them to be very careful.

I have been working with GLG for about 3 years now and have found it to be very rewarding. You are not obligated to do any work unless you accept it, and you are paid well and quickly. I have never felt or suspected any "shady deals
" from them. I recommend anyone who is an expert in a field to apply.

I love working as a council member for GLG I have been doing it for about 3 years. Get paid well. I have just recently been paid over $600 just for referring other council memebers. This is a very flexible and rewarding opportunity that I highly recommend to others.

I don't fnd anything destructive about this organisation. I have been a GLG Educator since 2006. I have done good number of consultations and fairly paid. My fee was hiked last year as per my demand. Upon submitting the invoice after completing a consultation, payment is prompt and through wire. I am a HR consultant and journalist from India.

The views and perspectives have differed from person to person in this open forum. I don't know why they rate it bad.

GLG is a highly respected consulting firm. I have always been promptly paid for my expert advice in my particular area of industry interest. I am in the digital media space and I am the VP of production in a digital media production boutique. I have had both in person consultations arranged at various media trade shows by their staff. I have attended cocktail meetings in NYC and have always been able to depend on their professionalism and excellent reputation. Being a GLG Scholar has also helped me with respect to enhancing my own professional reputation and personal bio. I have been with them since 2005.

Great site, prompt payment, have had no problems so far. Don't work for less than $ 350/hour. GLG get around 25 % commision.

I received an invitation from one of their representatives to do consultations for GLG, as have many others and was left with the impression that opportunities would be presented to me provided that I submitted applications for open consulting projects.

And yes, this is going to be posted on My3Cents.com as well as publicly posted here.

I have already supposedly been 'promoted' to the 'Educator' Level, still applying for consults, and I believe there are Federal Statutes governing this, if a company presents you with an opportunity and offers you a position, it is partly their responsibility, provided you are doing your part in whatever agreement you have with them, to ensure that you are benefiting from your efforts and being compensated for your efforts.

If you fall for this scam and you do research for their company for alleged consulting opportunities, make sure you send them a very large bill for the whatever research you did for them to do that, calculate the number of hours and multiply those hours by whatever hourly rate they set for you.

GLG is a legit company based in NYC that has had numerous articles about the company published in the nytimes, businessweek, WSJ and countless other publications. They've recently just announced a partnership with Bloomberg to make GLG’s experts available to Bloomberg clients. Nothing about this organization is a scam. They are well respected and actually have a compliance framework in place for their expert network. The company profile is readily available on LinkedIn, or just visit their website and see for yourself – www.glgroup.com. I’ve been consulting using GLG for close to 5 years and I won’t be quitting my day job anytime soon, but earning an extra 8 – 12K a year allows me extra money for my daughter’s college fund and a nice little vacation to boot.
Summed up: you set your own rate, there is no obligation at all, GLG pays you and bills the client (not you) for your services/time. Payment is prompt and via the wire or hard check (your choice). Excellent opportunity to network, get your name out there and learn a few things. I don’t understand these negative comments at all.

I have been a consultant with GLG for over 7 years now. They send me about 3 requests a month, some I accept, some I dont. Sometimes the client calls me, sometimes they dont. They sometimes change focus, make a decision without consulting anyone, move on to another project or even choose another consultant, that's life.

I have done between 6 and 14 consults in one year. From day 1 I set my fee at $250 per hour and get paid by direct deposit within days. My field is healthcare and I just learned I could charge more, so I think i will go up to $350/hr.

I have consulted with them for four years. They are professional, ethical, and I would not hesitate to recommend that one who has expertise sign on with them. Most of the consults are done in the evening. Most of those seeking my expertise appear to be located on the west coast, which works well for me being on the east coast. As someone else said, you cannot make a living of it, but it is very nice spare change!

There are more than 40 Expert Networks covering virtually every industry, profession, and geography. While Gerson Lehrman Group is one of the best, they're certainly not the only ones.

I'm considering working w GLG and was curious as to how exact details of tax / corporate status would work? Do I just get paid as an individual and will send me a W-9 at the end of the year which I'm responsible for reporting on my returns? Do they direct deposit payment into my bank account? What if I have an LLC that I use as my consulting gig? Any advice here is appreciated!

I have worked with GLG for 8 years now. They contacted me out of the blue. My referals vary from 1 to as many as 8 per month. I have booked as many as 5 in one month and I have also gone 4 months with nothing. Sometimes the "twist" on a topic is such that I dont feel comfortable accepting. Sometimes the client never gets back to you. I had a potential client in Ireland that changed appointments 5 times so I withdrew.

I started at $250 per hour but I hear I could make more. The more you make, teh more GLG makes so they wont argue with your rate. Be aware you might not get booked a soften if your arte is too high. I am in healthcare. They pay quickly within days (direct deposit) and I have also done a couple in-person presentations theough GLG to hedge fund managers.

There are several companies like GLG out there. One to avoid is Maverick Research. I did a complex consult for them and they never paid me. They made excuses ("Check's on the way"etc ) Then my contact (initials AH) stopped taking my calls. My invoice to their office in NY came back unclaimed. Avoid them like the plague!!!
