Going to Regina...and Winnipeg Airport Security

Monday, March 17, 2008 8:04 PM

I'm heading to Regina tonight (thank you Telus Aircard for the uninterrupted, hassle free internet!) to attend their community connection event in association with the VS.NET 2008 launch events. Very pumped. I'm meeting Gary and Will for drinks...I guess I'll have to sample Pilsner...I never have.

[Edit] In the time that I started writing this and right now, they just announced the flight will be delayed...I'm not boarding until 9ish, which is about 40 minutes late.[/Edit]

So...I'm going through airport security and I empty everything into my coat to go to the scanner, but realize before I walk through the ... um..., well I'll call it the "Metal Detector" for now...so before I walk through it, I realize that I still have my watch and rings on...I guess I'm getting wanded (by Betty*, the blonde non-butch security worker no less).

I walk through.

It doesn't beep.

IT DOESN'T BEEP! Seriously, I have a watch made almost ENTIRELY OF METAL and TWO METAL RINGS on. And it doesn't beep?! Maybe its not a *metal* detector and only detects certain substances? I dunno...it was just weird though.

*Betty isn't her real name...I didn't want to say it because I figured that she *might* get into trouble for not realizing I just walked through a metal detector with a huge piece of metal attached to my hand

When I was returning from Seattle last November I set my backpack on the machine and the machine broke with my backpack inside it...and of course being the mobile geek I am I had several pocket PC's, a laptop and several USB drives inside with assorted cables...that took some explaining before they decided I wasn't a threat and let me go...I suppose the scruffy beard and long hair didn't help me much either :| 3/17/2008 8:12 PM | Lou

You sure the package your watch came in didn't say "Roleks: Now made with 'mettal' (TM)"? 3/17/2008 8:21 PM | Kyle

Lou: Oh man...yeah, airport security in the states is WAY different than in Canada...even in the larger airports in Canada I've been in, it doesn't seem to be as stand-offish (unless i'm going through customs in a Canadian airport to the States mind you...)

Kyle: HAR HAR HAR har heh hrm...wait...it does say Roleks...wtf?!

If your watch and ring don't have enough iron content it wont set the metal detector off.

Your watch shouldn't have any iron in it (hold a magnet against it and see if it sticks) because it could get magnetized and affect it's rate. And your ring is probably a chrome/silver alloy without enough iron to set it off.

That being said I've got family members with so much iron in their blood they can set them off.

The machines also have to be calibrated to different sensitivities depending on where they're located... ie. inside a steel structure building like the Wpg Airport. 3/17/2008 9:54 PM | Cam
